For most civil engineering strut monitoring, what matters is repeatability over weeks, not a laboratory-grade absolute number. A properly sealed 50 kg cell from Kingmach, when installed parallel to the load path and temperature-compensated, can give you drift-free readings within a couple of percent—enough to spot trends before they become problems.
You can, but it’s not just about an IP rating sticker. We tend to recommend the stainless steel version with a vented cable so condensation doesn’t creep inside. Proper booting of the cable exit and a drip loop in the wiring go a long way. Many of our users combine these with a desiccant-filled junction box for extra margin in wet climates.
Standard practice is to use a cell whose diameter is smaller than the bearing plate recess. If that’s still tight, we can machine a custom slim-profile version that drops the height to around 40 mm. The mating surfaces must be flat and parallel—any offset can shear the cell and throw off readings. Often a thin hardened steel spacer above and below solves alignment issues.
